Course Description:
Our cellphones are a powerful tool that can be used to capture and communicate the way we perceive the world that surrounds us. This course will begin with a self-exploration exercise where each participant will photograph what they consider to be genuine and meaningful, a concept referred to as first-person documentary. The techniques participants will explore and develop during this workshop will build on
Photography skills while reflecting on how this medium can be used to tell powerful stories. Participants will be encouraged to create unique images while thinking critically about how marginalized groups, often unseen, have also created artistic work. By learning about underrepresented photographers and artists in the process, participants will create a project inspired by any of their own personal struggles.
